Html5 Goodness From Adobe

It used to be that if you wanted to create an animated, interactive interface for a website, you needed to use Flash. You might be able to get away with some basic animations using JavaScript, but if you made it too complicated, all you’d end up doing is bogging your visitor’s computer down and causing problems.

Plus, JavaScript was potentially more complicated to use than Flash, at least for those who aren’t fond of coding. But, of course, Flash doesn’t always work well (or sometimes not at all) on mobile devices, including the iPhone and iPad.

Enter HTML5. HTML5 works on just about every mobile platform out there. Anything you could create in Flash can be created with HTML5 (and sometimes added JavaScript and CSS3): animations, interactive elements, and more.

But it reintroduces the coding issue for a lot of designers, who might not be crazy about hand-coding everything. That’s where Adobe Edge comes in.

DOWNLOAD THE DEMO HERE…

It’s an entirely new program (currently available as a free preview version) that helps you create animated web content using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. It includes drawing and text tools for creating new compositions, lets you import images in a variety of formats (SVG, PNG, JPG and GIF), and choreograph animation with a timeline-based editor. You can animate position, color, shape, size, rotation and other elements at the property level.

The great thing about using HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript rather than Flash for your animated and interactive content is that your site remains standards-compliant. It preserves your CSS layout and keeps your content layer separate from your presentation layer. Because of this, your site will be compatible across a wider range of platforms and will be more search engine friendly with less work.

Because Edge is currently only in preview-stage, it’s bound to have some bugs and feature limitations. With that said, it already includes twenty five built-in easing effects, and other features to get you started. No word on how much Edge will cost after the 150 day trial period ends.

The Edge interface looks similar to many of Adobe’s other programs for working with interactive content, like Premiere Pro or Flash. If you’re already familiar with these programs, the Edge interface should be pretty easy to adjust to. If not, there’s going to be a definite learning curve, but it’s still a relatively easy interface to figure out.

Facebook: Back To Old School

Facebook has become well known for rolling out updates that seem to detract from the user experience and doing so without any user consultation.  The latest batch of updates includes widely discussed and globally despised chat (I’ve yet to hear anyone say anything positive about it).  Not since Microsoft’s awful Internet explorer 6 have I seen such a massive company disregard so many industry standards and principles.

Thankfully though some lovely people have whipped up a nice little add on for Chrome and Firefox that runs a bit of javascript every time your Browser hits Facebook and changes the chat window back to the old style.  The script install in seconds on Chrome, however in Firefox you need to install the Greasemonkey add on first.

Currently there isn’t support for IE or Safari browser, but quite frankly if you use either of those browsers you don’t deserve to have the old Facebook chat back! ;)

Stop-Motion Film Made With 350,000 Post-Its

Melissa, a Brazilian footwear brand, creates a giant time-lapse video using Post-it notes as pixels.

A Brazilian footwear company has turned the side of a building in São Paulo into a mega-huge movie screen for an animation that uses Post-its like analogue pixels.

Twenty-five animators worked for a steady five months, stamping sherbet-coloured notes on the U-shaped foyer of the Galeria Melissa to generate an ever-rotating cast of images — from shadow boxes to a charming, psychedelic elephant -captured on time-lapse video above. By project’s end, the animators had blown through a whopping 350,000 Post-Its.

Why Are You Using Internet Explorer, You diot?!

BBC has published a report from insulting, I mean consulting, firm, AptiQuant who gave internet users an IQ test and then compared their scores with the browser they used to take the test.

Users of IE were tarnished with being the least intelligent. (Well, of course, Firefox all the way, eh!) Anyway… the report from AptiQuant has caused uproar from supporters of IE who are looking to take legal action against the firm.

We do love a good HOAX! BBC suckers! Haha. Do your homework – did you even check out the company who released the report? Epic fail. Haha.

Magento – I’m Mad Frrit, Me! #ecommerce

Since starting to work for Big Eye Deers I’ve been introduced to something called Magento and it’s started to take over my life. ‘What is Magento?’ you may ask. Well, apart from being a stupid-sounding word, and all techi stuff aside, it’s basically a type of online shop (boutique or superstore) that ANYONE can have. Tiesto’s got one http://www.shoptiestoglobal.com/ (yup, we did this) and non-global superstar DJs can have one too. I think they’d be good for anyone with something to sell. A florist maybe, furniture retailer, sunglasses seller, hairdresser (get your tigi products and hairbrushes selling online), you could be selling anything.

Right Up My Tweeterstreet!

Just discovered TweeterStreet thanks to the great 6 music. It’s a project set up by a photographer with the aim of capturing Twitter users where they tweeted and with what they tweeted. Ranging from everyday insights to the slightly more bizarre and quirky, there are already some really good images.

Once there are 140 portraits (quite fitting for twitter’s 140 character limit!) they will then be published in a book, if you want to get involved go to their about page!

QR Codes

qr_codesYou may have seen these odd looking pixelated barcodes in the newspaper or a magazine and wondered, is it a bird…? Is it a plane…?! No, it’s a Quick Response Code or QR code that is becoming increasingly popular, now the mobile phone market has taken off. They do look unattractive and can go unnoticed, but embedded within are hidden links and messages which can potentially make the QR code a nifty way to reach your audience in the mobile markets.

Fancy A Festival?! B@TV

be-at

With festival season now fully in swing I find myself filled with that jealous ‘ I wish I was there’ feeling on almost a weekly basis, however my discovery of B@TV has to some extent eased the craving.

So what is this wonderful website I hear you all cry?!  Basically it’s about as close as you can get to all the major dance music festivals and clubbing events without actually being there.  You can even watch some of them live!  The site has been built using flash and provides a perfect blend of audio, visual and social media.

The whole experience is further enhanced with the integration of the usual social media ‘like’ and share functionality as well as some great in house social elements such as being able to mark your attendance at events and bookmarking your favourite sets.

The well balanced combination of high quality audio, multiple video players, chat, timed comments and crowd noise, all nicely laid out in a clean and well thought out interface really do make you feel like you’re actually in the club/field.
